Beerappa Siddappa Doni’s Inspiring Leap from the Kuruba Community to Civil Services with AIR 551 in UPSC CSE 2024.
In a story that reflects the changing face of rural India and the rising aspirations from its heartlands, Beerappa Siddappa Doni, a youth from the Kuruba shepherding community, has secured All India Rank 551 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2024.
Hailing from Amage village in Maharashtra and currently visiting his relatives in Nanavadi, Belagavi district, Karnataka, Beerappa Sidappa Doni’s success sparked widespread celebrations on the very grasslands where his community grazes sheep daily, a setting symbolic of his journey from tradition to transformation.
Beerappa Siddappa Doni’s success in the UPSC Civil Services Examination marks a powerful moment of representation, signalling a shift from subsistence roles to leadership positions in national governance. His story not only uplifts his own family and village but also shines a light on the untapped potential within India’s pastoral and agrarian communities.
Beerappa Sidappa Doni’s UPSC journey
Beerappa Siddappa Doni, named after his family deity, is a B.Tech graduate with dreams that once revolved around the Indian Army.
Inspired by his elder brother, who serves in the military, he initially wanted to follow the same path.
However, he couldn’t attempt the officer recruitment exams due to unforeseen circumstances.
Instead, he took up a job with India Post, but his aspirations pushed him further.
Driven by the desire to serve in the civil services, he resigned and began preparing for the IAS examination, ultimately clearing it in his third attempt.
Hope to Serve as an IPS Officer
With a rank of 551 and his preferences listed in the UPSC application, Beerappa Siddappa Doni now hopes to join the Indian Police Service (IPS).
His story marks a personal triumph and a proud moment for his family and community.
His father, Siddappa Doni, though unfamiliar with the complexities of the UPSC exam, always believed in his son’s hard work. “People tell me my son will become a senior police officer. That makes me proud,” he said.
A Community’s Pride
His uncle, Yallappa Gaddi, who lives in Nanavadi, echoed the sentiments of many:
“We want him to be a good officer and help poor people like us. His success will inspire other young men and women from our community.”
Indeed, the celebration in Nanavadi is more than personal—it represents hope, representation, and change for the Kuruba shepherding community, which has long remained on the margins of mainstream educational success stories.

Beerappa Siddappa Doni’s journey reminds us that India’s civil services are no longer the domain of urban elites alone.
