Key Observations about the recommended candidate’s marks
- Written Dominance: Most toppers had very strong written scores (820+), showcasing the continued importance of the Main exam performance.
- Interview Scores Variability: Interview scores among top candidates ranged from 162 to 210. A high interview score often helped push candidates slightly ahead in tightly packed written score bands.
- Exceptional Interview Performances: Some candidates (like Shah Margi Chirag and Ettaboyina Sai Shivani) achieved 200+ in the interview, highlighting the vital role a good Personality Test can play.
Category-Wise Highlights
- General category candidates dominate the top 20 ranks, but there is notable representation from EWS and OBC communities among the toppers.
- Candidates like Komal Punia (AIR 6) from the EWS category, scoring 856 in the written and 176 in the interview (total 1032), show that reservation categories are competing fiercely at the highest levels.
High-Scoring Patterns
- Written Scores Above 850: Very rare โ seen in Harshita Goyal (851) and Komal Punia (856), indicating an exceptionally difficult Mains exam this year.
- Interview Boost: For candidates with slightly lower written scores (~820-830), a very high interview mark (200+) often lifted their final rank into the top 20.
Lessons for Future Aspirants
- Solid Mains Preparation: Without crossing 800โ820 in Mains, it becomes extremely difficult to get a top rank, no matter how well the interview goes.
- Interview Matters: While Mains is key, a 200+ interview score can make the crucial difference, especially around the selection cutoff margins.
- Consistent Strategy: A combination of strong written content, calm interview performance, and thorough syllabus coverage remains the winning formula.

The UPSC CSE 2024 marks analysis reinforces that preparation needs to be holistic. Candidates must aim for both depth in their written answers and clarity, confidence, and authenticity during the interview.
